Use an account, sync, and restore your data
Learn what an optional Layer account syncs through your private iCloud account.
You do not need an account to finish onboarding, get recommendations, or use Kit and Log on one phone. An account adds private iCloud sync.
What signing in does
Layer uses Sign in with Apple. When you are signed in, it copies supported Layer data to your private CloudKit database so that data can stay in step across your devices and return after a reinstall.
Layer's team cannot read the contents of that private CloudKit database.
What syncs today
Layer currently syncs:
- Your Layer run log
- Kit and closet items
- Gear and shoe photos
- Shoes and saved shoe state
- Preferences
- Inbox read state
What stays on one device
Layer does not currently sync:
- Learned comfort calibration
- Inbox message history
- Apple Health workout data
- The local evidence used to match an Apple Health workout to a Layer run
Those device-only items do not return after deleting and reinstalling the app.
Before deleting the app
Check that you are signed in to Layer and iCloud and that sync has completed without an error. Changes that have not reached iCloud cannot be recovered from it. Do not reinstall as a first troubleshooting step. Contact support while your local data is still on the phone.
Restore after a reinstall
Reinstall Layer, sign in with the same Layer account, and make sure the phone uses the same iCloud account. Data that successfully reached iCloud can return from your private CloudKit database as sync completes. Signing in cannot recover data that never synced.
If Layer says that you are not signed in to iCloud, sign in through iOS Settings. If it says iCloud storage is full, free iCloud space before expecting new changes or photos to reach other devices. Data already stored on the current phone remains there while sync is paused.
Export is not a backup
Export My Data creates a portability archive. Layer does not have an importer, so that file cannot restore the app after a reinstall and should not be described as a backup.
